the sales pitch? eye granted, peers–the obvious: her kind of smart was not their kind of smart–but added– the less obvious: to count her kind of smart as one of their own would prove as smart a move as any–for  them–  even more so than for her.

Yesterday, I gave a class lecture on third wave feminism, which included an introduction to postmodern feminism. I was being evaluated, so I was super-nervous, but I think my overall performance was better than I had hoped. Moreover, I felt great about how I introduced the subject matter at the start of class. I told the students that as unpopular as the term ‘feminism’ is in social circles, the term ‘postmodern’ is equally (if not way more!) unpopular in many social and academic circles.

___

I then shared with my students this bit of wisdom I had gleaned from personal experience: That, too many more times than I could honestly ignore  over the course of my life, it had been the case that other similarly stigmatized views — take your pick: feminism, Marxism, anarchism, pragmatism, radical constructivism, atheism, mysticism, socialism, communism, postmodernism, etc. — ended up being the source of incredibly empowering, intellectually-rewarding thoughts and insights.

___

Weirdly enough, I explained, in each one of “ism” cases, I explicitly recalled harboring initially dismissive, negative attitudes towards the views  before I  could describe them in my own words, before I even had any first person experience or knowledge  of what they  were about..  Basically, in each case, I had been told the views were wrong, bad, misguided, evil, or irrational and had run on that presumed intellectual authority of other people — most of whom, I later determined, had derived their opinion  largely from ignorance of the material, or insecurities (fear) of the implications of their own unique interpretation of the material.

___

I then played for them the following clip (a short  2 minute video where individuals are being asked their thoughts on feminists & feminism), and asked them to consider their initial responses in light of  my remarks:

___

I concluded by expressing my hope was that (1) they would make a mental note to themselves anytime that they too had the experience of harboring a negative or dismissive attitude to a foreign idea (or its proponents), view, theory, movement, or “-ism” —before they had explored the primary source material on their own, and (2) remember me sharing my experience with them.

__

I then set about the task of  doing justice to explaining  some of the  varied and unique theories and ideas represented in postmodern feminist thought.

__

I also got the idea, after class, that it might be neat to put together a syllabus for a future philosophy course specifically designed around the objective of presenting & teaching these various marginalized philosophical views and social theories.

Me: Why don’t you just tell me all your metaphysical views,

and I’ll just  hold those.
Thomas: Well, I’m probably a primitivist about causation.
Me:  Okay, got it.  So, like, the dinosaurs caused everything?

regret the only-semi-conscious decision to not see when, in pushing them away, we were really pushing against ourselves, punishing ourselves- that in pushing them away, we were deciding, always prematurely,  whether we did or did not deserve that much love, joy, and kindness in this life.

Letting go doesn’t mean you don’t care about someone anymore.

It’s just realizing that the only person

you really have control over

And we sometimes do cross paths with people that we feel confident we have known our whole life, or that we had to have met at some time previous to our imagination. And its happened to me now maybe a handful of times, but it still catches me off guard. And this time the experience was so straightforward: someone to share ideas with, that can collaborate, calibrate strengths and weaknesses, successfully, that is compelled towards the same end, with the same warmly familiar- distinctly alien,  remote- intensity of spirit, clarity of purpose.
